Copper tube for water and building services

Choose the tube type through the project standard and local code.

Copper plumbing tube is normally ordered under ASTM B88/B88M or a recognised regional water-tube standard such as EN 1057. ASTM B88 classifies seamless copper water tube as Type K, L, M or DWV. These types share the same outside diameter at a given nominal size but use different wall thicknesses.

Type names are not interchangeable approvals. The permitted application depends on the adopted plumbing or mechanical code, design pressure, temperature, joining method, water chemistry and project specification. State the standard, nominal size, type, grade, temper, length, quantity and documentation in the enquiry.

A clearer route to the correct water tube

Reduce type, size and compliance errors before ordering.

01

Separate plumbing from ACR tube

ASTM B88 water tube uses nominal sizing and defined wall types. ACR tube uses actual OD and a refrigerant-service internal condition.

02

Compare K, L, M and DWV

A structured wall comparison helps the buyer identify the product type specified by the engineer or governing code.

03

Confirm certification early

Material certificates, test scope, marking and third-party inspection can be stated before commercial review.

04

Configure the requirement visually

Use the 3D product builder to organise the tube form and purchasing details before sending the RFQ.

The buyer and system designer remain responsible for confirming code acceptance, water quality and service suitability.

Potable-water approval is project and jurisdiction specific. State whether NSF/ANSI 61, regional approval, dual marking or other compliance evidence is required.

Wall-type selection

Understand what K, L, M and DWV identify.

The type identifies a wall series within ASTM B88. It does not replace engineering calculations or local-code review.

Configure before enquiring

Build the plumbing-tube requirement in 3D.

Open the interactive builder with Copper Plumbing Tubes preselected. Use it to organise the type, nominal size, standard, grade, temper, length, quantity and destination for technical review.

01

Select the wall type

State Type K, L, M or DWV exactly as shown in the project requirement.

02

Define the tube

Add ASTM B88/B88M or EN 1057, nominal size, grade, temper and length.

03

Confirm compliance scope

Add MTC, test, marking, approval, inspection, packing and destination requirements.

Building-services applications

Copper water tube selected through the governing code

01

Hot and cold water

Domestic or commercial water distribution where the selected tube type and material comply with the project requirements.

02

Underground water service

Type K is commonly specified, but burial conditions, corrosion protection and local code must be reviewed.

03

Hydronic heating

Copper plumbing tube for applicable closed-loop heating service based on temperature, pressure and system chemistry.

04

Fire-protection systems

Selected tube types may be used where the fire code, listing and system design explicitly permit copper tube.

05

Drain, waste and vent

DWV tube for non-pressure drainage applications under the relevant plumbing code.

06

Prefabricated building services

Cut lengths and defined tube conditions for modular plumbing assemblies and controlled installation work.

Water-service note

Evaluate water chemistry, velocity, temperature, pressure, disinfection practice, joining materials and stagnation risk. The material alone does not guarantee system performance.

Frequently asked questions about copper plumbing tubes

What is the difference between Type K, L and M copper tube?+

For the same nominal size, all three have the same outside diameter. Type K has the heaviest wall, Type L a medium wall and Type M a lighter wall. The engineer and applicable code determine which type is permitted.

Is ASTM B88 the correct standard for copper water tube?+

ASTM B88/B88M covers seamless copper water tube. ASTM B42 covers seamless copper pipe for general applications and uses a different dimensional basis. Purchase to the standard stated by the project.

Can ACR copper tube be used instead of plumbing tube?+

Do not substitute by appearance or outside diameter. ACR tube follows refrigerant-service requirements and actual-OD sizing, while plumbing tube follows the applicable water-tube standard and nominal type system.

Is Type M permitted for every water installation?+

No. Type M is not accepted for every service or jurisdiction. Confirm the adopted plumbing code, pressure, temperature and installation conditions before specifying it.

Does copper tube automatically have potable-water approval?+

No. Material grade and product standard do not automatically prove every regional drinking-water approval. State NSF/ANSI 61 or other required approval in the RFQ and confirm the available evidence.

Can I configure Copper Plumbing Tubes in the 3D builder?+

Yes. Open the 3D product builder with Copper Plumbing Tubes selected, prepare the requirement and send it for review.
